What Do I Need To Do To Apply For U.S. Citizenship?

After holding a green card (lawful permanent resident status) for five years or more, you may qualify to apply for U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, you may be eligible after only three years.

Applicants must also meet several other requirements, including continuous residence in the United States for the required period, good moral character, and basic knowledge of English, U.S. history, and how the government functions.

Successfully completing the naturalization process grants nearly all the same rights and privileges as those enjoyed by natural-born U.S. citizens.

Maitreyee Mopalwar helps clients understand and navigate each step of the process — from determining eligibility to preparing for the citizenship interview and exam. Based in New Jersey and serving clients nationwide, she is committed to helping individuals achieve their goal of becoming U.S. citizens. If you believe you may be eligible, start your naturalization journey today.

How Do I Start the Process?

During your first consultation with Maitreyee Mopalwar, she will review your background and qualifications to confirm your eligibility for naturalization. If you meet the requirements, she will guide you through gathering the information needed to complete the USCIS Form N-400 — the official application for U.S. citizenship.

If additional documents are required, Maitreyee will provide a detailed list and help you collect everything necessary to support your application. She also helps clients prepare for the interview by reviewing sample questions and offering practical guidance to help them feel confident and well-prepared.

Once all materials are in order, Mellorah Law PLLC will assist with completing and submitting your Form N-400 to the USCIS. If you’re ready to take the next step toward becoming a U.S. citizen, schedule your consultation today.

What Will Happen at My Interview?

When you attend your naturalization interview, you’ll need to bring your green card and a valid state ID or driver’s license to verify your identity. During the interview, a USCIS officer will review your Form N-400 and ask you to confirm that all the information is accurate. If anything has changed since you filed your application, you’ll need to explain those changes and provide documentation if required.

The officer will then ask you a few personal questions, similar to your green card interview. You’ll also be asked to read one sentence in English and write another as dictated by the officer. Finally, you’ll take a brief civics test consisting of 10 questions about U.S. history and government — and you only need to answer six correctly to pass.

Although the interview can feel intimidating, with the right preparation it becomes a manageable and even positive experience. Maitreyee Mopalwar helps clients prepare for each step, so they can approach the interview with confidence and peace of mind.
